The Lawrence Journal-World is now using green energy purchased from Lawrence’s Bowerstock Dam and power company Zephyr Energy to power their presses. Substituting wind-generated and hydroelectric power for electricity from Westar’s coal-fired plants makes sense. Said World Company President Dan Simons:
I believe it’s the right thing to do and hopefully can start a trend here in Kansas and in Lawrence. We can use the alternative energy opportunities that are available to us.
The World Company is also considering using green energy to power their local cable channel. Several other Lawrence businesses, including City Hall, are looking at purchasing green energy, too. Homeowners can also purchase “green tags” – in effect paying Bowerstock to produce enough energy to offset some or all of their annual energy consumption. The energy produced by the dam is transferred to the overall grid, thereby reducing the amount of energy produced by traditional means, and reducing our consumption of nonrenewable fossil fuels, which produces greenhouse gases.
Zephyr’s CO2 calculator can show you how many pounds of greenhouse gases your activities produce annually.
